The Complete
Room-by-Room Guide

December 4, 2024 10 min read By The Valley Clean Team

After cleaning thousands of homes, we've learned that technique matters as much as effort. Clean the wrong way, and you're just moving dirt around. Clean the right way, and your home stays fresher, longer.

This is the same room-by-room approach our professional cleaners use. Follow it, and you'll clean faster and more effectively than ever before.

The Golden Rule: Top to Bottom, Back to Front

Always clean from the ceiling down to the floor, and from the back of the room toward the door. Dust falls downward, and you don't want to walk through areas you've already cleaned.

Kitchen Cleaning Guide

The kitchen is usually the hardest room to clean properly. Grease, food particles, and moisture create a perfect storm for buildup.

The Order That Works

  1. Clear and declutter: Put away dishes, remove items from counters.
  2. Appliances first: Microwave interior, oven exterior, refrigerator exterior. Let degreaser sit while you work elsewhere.
  3. Upper cabinets: Wipe fronts and handles. Check tops if visible.
  4. Countertops: Clear, spray, wipe. Move appliances to clean underneath.
  5. Lower cabinets and drawers: Wipe fronts and handles.
  6. Sink: Scrub basin, polish fixtures, wipe down disposal splash guard.
  7. Stovetop: Remove grates, clean surface, replace grates.
  8. Floor: Sweep first, then mop. Don't forget under the table and behind the trash can.

Spots Most People Miss

  • Top of the refrigerator
  • Inside and around the trash can
  • Light switches and cabinet handles
  • Under the dish drying rack
  • The range hood filter

Bathroom Cleaning Guide

Bathrooms need both cleaning AND disinfecting. These are two different steps.

The Order That Works

  1. Apply toilet bowl cleaner: Let it sit while you clean everything else.
  2. Spray shower/tub: Let product work while you continue.
  3. Dust vents and light fixtures: Start high.
  4. Clean mirrors: Spray, wipe in Z-pattern, buff dry.
  5. Wipe counters and sink: Don't forget faucets and handles.
  6. Scrub shower/tub: Focus on grout lines and fixtures.
  7. Clean toilet: Outside first (lid, seat, base), then inside.
  8. Floor: Start at far corner, work toward door.

Spots Most People Miss

  • Behind the toilet base
  • Exhaust fan cover
  • Inside the toilet brush holder
  • Shower door tracks
  • Cabinet interior shelves

Bedroom Cleaning Guide

The Order That Works

  1. Strip the bed: Wash sheets in hot water weekly.
  2. Declutter surfaces: Nightstands, dressers, windowsills.
  3. Dust from top: Ceiling fan, light fixtures, top of furniture.
  4. Dust middle: Furniture surfaces, picture frames, mirrors.
  5. Make the bed: Fresh sheets create that "clean room" feeling.
  6. Vacuum or mop: Include under the bed and in closet.

Spots Most People Miss

  • Top of ceiling fan blades
  • Under the bed
  • Top of door frames
  • Lamp shades
  • Baseboards behind furniture
